Registered Dietitian

POSITION DESCRIPTION:  The Registered Dietitian serves as a member of the multidisciplinary healthcare team and assesses nutrition needs; develops and implements nutrition care plans; evaluates and reports the results appropriately; interprets, evaluates and utilizes pertinent and current research related to nutrition care; and coordinates activities according to department policies and procedures and the goals for the healthcare team. The dietitian meets patient needs by providing individual or group education to participants and/or caregivers in participant homes or community-based settings to improve patient health outcomes, engagement, safety, and quality of life in their home and community-based settings such as adult foster care homes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLILITES: 

  • Designs, selects and implements nutrition education strategies to meet the learning needs of the individual, group, community and population. Evaluates achievement of learning objectives by the patient and/or family.
  • Patient care through application of the Nutrition Care Process (NCP) including the completion of the nutrition assessment, determination of the nutrition diagnosis, developing nutrition focused and evidence-based interventions (including the nutrition prescription, example: diet/feeding order and nutrition monitoring and evaluation.
  • Maintains clinical productivity standards and accurate record keeping of daily clinical activities, including information for scheduling and billing.
  • Provides and coordinates services related to Medical Nutrition Therapy for patients including collaboration with patients’ care team.
  • Accountable for setting priorities, meeting deadlines, and promoting the achievement of patient outcomes.
  • Contributes to and engages in improving department and organizational metrics.
  • May engage in communication and interactions with the community that may include public speaking, news releases, and other forms of publication.   
  • Travels throughout Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren Counties as needed for service provision conducting in participant homes and community-based settings.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor of Science in Food Science, Nutrition and/or Dietetics and documented completion of an Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Accredited Internship Program or Coordinated Program
  • Must be registered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration
  • One year of experience working with the frail, elderly, or long-term care population; preferred.
  • Computer literacy in routine office applications required. General knowledge of long-term care, special populations, person-centered thinking, and community resources preferred.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:  To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.   • Must possess a valid Michigan driver’s license.
  • Must have reliable transportation and provide current proof of automobile insurance.
  • Must have testing for tuberculosis upon hire, annual symptoms review thereafter.

REASONING ABILITY: 

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.   

OTHER SKILLS & ABILITIES:

 Excellent oral and written communication skills and excellent interviewing skills are required with a capability to listen effectively and work well with people on a personal level. Good judgment must be used as well as an ability to deal with confidential issues.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

 Ability to read, analyze program standards and guidelines. Ability to write reports and correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from clients, customers, educators, social services personnel, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: 

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, rations, and proportions to practical situations. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate and express oneself. The employee frequently operates a computer, using other tools and controls, and positioning oneself to operate computer and other office equipment. The employee is frequently required to remain in a stationary position, and then occasionally move about inside the office to access workstation, office equipment, and file storage areas, etc. The employee must be able to travel in all kinds of weather.

While performing the duties of this job the employee may need to regularly move up to 10 pounds and frequently move up to 15 pounds. Specific vision abilities for this job may include close vision, depth perception, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
