Behavioral Health Counselor

POSITION SUMMARY:

Delivers compassionate, individualized treatment to patients who reside in their home or a community-based setting with psychological, behavioral, physical and/or socialization needs. Clinician will provide comprehensive, person-centered, and culturally appropriate psychological assessment & evaluation, treatment, psychotherapy, crisis intervention, referrals, and related clinical services primarily in patients’ home with some limited virtual service delivery.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides comprehensive assessment and treatment of mental, emotional, and behavioral health, and substance abuse needs using specialized clinical knowledge and advanced clinical skills.
  • Performs comprehensive diagnostic assessments of patients’ needs and psychosocial status.
  • Collaborates with other members of the multidisciplinary team, as appropriate, to develop treatment goals for the patient. Participates in multidisciplinary patient care conferences discussing information obtained from patient assessments, updates, treatment plans.
  • Provides appropriate documentation of all pertinent information obtained in interviews, consultation with other healthcare professionals, referrals, contacts, and supportive services provided to each patient. Complete necessary documentation and reporting in accordance with departmental standards and Federal and State regulations.
  • Delivers full range of psychological and counseling services within licensure, certification, and scope of practice.
  • Delivers effective evidence-based, meaningful clinical interventions, apply research to practice. Comfortable and skilled in multisystemic approaches to care, collaborating with families, care providers as needed.
  • Develops and review treatment plans, discharge, and referral care coordination.
  • Conducts suicide and crisis evaluation and interventions.
  • Facilitates psychoeducational and support groups as needed.
  • Provides services in various clinical settings, including in-person, virtually, or in approved off-site location.
  • Consistently meets key performance indicators as established with program manager.
  • Attends mandatory staff meetings and training as directed by supervisor.
  • Maintains accurate, ethical, and timely clinical documentation in electronic medical records system consistent with compliance standards.
  • Follows standard work and organizational policies.
  • Maintains current, accurate, and HIPAA compliant participant files and program records.
  • Travels throughout Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren counties for in-home service delivery.
  • Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

No supervisory responsibilities of employees.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

The requirements listed are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Travel throughout Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren counties required; will need reliable transportation.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling Psychology or Other Related Mental Health discipline. Unrestricted, current license in the state of practice. Must maintain all licensures, certifications, continuing educational requirements, etc. Ability to work with all adults (18+) and diagnosed with mental health, substance use disorders, and/or intellectual disabilities. Strong evaluative, clinical assessment and conceptualization skills. Training and education in interpersonal, emotional, and environmental trauma, substance abuse, mood disorders, or any specialized area of practice. Training and familiarity with evidenced-based interventions (i.e. CBT, motivational interviewing, ACT). Proven experience as an effective practitioner, demonstrated experience with treatment leading to symptom reduction and improved ways of thinking, feeling, and living with patients of diverse backgrounds. Strong interpersonal, verbal, nonverbal, and written communication skills and ability to develop and maintain therapeutic alliance. Excellent computer, data analysis as well as the ability to plan, organize, and handle multiple tasks independently and as a team member, are essential.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to accurately define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret program standards and guidelines and professional journals. Ability to write reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from customers, educators, social service personnel, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measures using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Excellent oral and written communication skills and excellent interviewing skills are required with a capability to listen effectively and work well with people on a personal level. Good judgement must be used as well as an ability to deal with confidential issues. Motivated to support growth of behavioral health services. Understands the value of addressing mental health needs from community-driven perspective. Flexible, self-motivated, dedicated, and hard-working; adaptable, comfortable with change and able to quickly pivot when needed. Delivers services in a professional manner. Ability to apply equity in mental health, understand and embody the importance of intercultural development, demonstrate inclusive behaviors, and ability to treat the diverse needs of patient population. Understanding and sensitive appreciation for cultural differences. Demonstrates a commitment to providing outstanding patient care and customer service in a manner that is reflective of our mission, values, and customer service standards. Patient-centered focus, compassionate, caring, and empathic. Works well in teams and takes initiative as a self-starter, can work independently with limited supervision. Values learning and skill development. Strong conflict resolution skills.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate and express oneself. The employee frequently operates a computer, using other tools and controls, and positioning oneself to operate computer and other office equipment. The employee is frequently required to remain in a stationary position, and then occasionally move about inside the office to access workstation, office equipment, and file storage areas, etc. The employee must be able to travel in all kinds of weather.

While performing the duties of this job the employee may need to regularly move up to 10 pounds and frequently move up to 15 pounds. Specific vision abilities for this job may include close vision, depth perception, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
