Week five of staying home. Still working, but from home. I never was interested in being a remote worker. I am energized by my colleagues, learning from them, gaining inspiration from them, and also laughing and crying together when needed.
I’m adjusting, though, better than I could have imagined. The first week was difficult. I couldn’t find a comfortable spot to work or figure out how to get organized. I had to make a couple trips back to the office for different technology pieces. But I figured it out, eventually.
My ‘desk’ overlooks the back yard. I strategically arranged my work space so I could watch the birds, and that has been a daily delight.
The bulk of work in my department revolves around managing the work of about 150 senior volunteers who do amazing work in their communities. All of those volunteers are also now safe at home. Our priority quickly turned to helping those seniors, and others, to remain connected.
The topic of isolation has been at the forefront of discussions at the Area Agency on Aging for some time now. We have been planning what our role could and should be for isolated seniors in our community.
Then COVID-19 hit with little forewarning. We knew that addressing isolation and loneliness would rapidly become a critical part of navigating this time for many people, particularly seniors. So, with some quick teamwork we created a plan for reaching out to seniors who would benefit from chats with a friendly caller.
We trained staff members who would very quickly become the Friendly Callers. The team members who are making those calls report back some great conversations, as well as some difficult ones. Some calls are five minutes, and some are thirty. Some people want a call once a week, while others need more frequent touchpoints. We happily make those accommodations.
There are relationships beginning that I think could become lifelong friendships. Everyone on the team has said how rewarding it is to be a part of this work.
If you know someone who could use a friendly call, or maybe you are someone who could use a friendly call, please reach out. The number to call is 269-408-4332. You will receive a call back quickly, and we welcome you with open arms. Please reach out.
Changing subjects… I’ve tried to note some observations I’m having during this time. Most are silly. Like, have you noticed that many of the people on your local news shows are having to do their own hair and makeup? It makes me smile. And it makes me appreciate their human-ness more than I did before.
Also, who do you know who has cut their own hair? Why not? It’s been fun to see some of those, mostly on Facebook, since we don’t see many people in person. I know a few people who’ve done so, with differing results. Not naming names.
Is anyone doing jigsaw puzzles? That’s a long-time family tradition for us, and this provided a great time to dive back in. I’ve got three 1,000-piece puzzles on their way. I look forward to that.
Whatever you’re doing with your time, I hope you find joy. My husband and I are enjoying some movies at home. I get to have FaceTime with my grandkids regularly, and that is so wonderful. We’ve even pulled out some old albums to play on our record player – yes, record player!
If you’re struggling, tell someone. If you need someone you’re comfortable reaching out to, please call us. 269-408-4332. Together we are all better.
