We are seeking volunteers and counselors.

SHIP (State Health Insurance Assistance Program) is a free, unbiased, volunteer-staffed service which assists people who have problems or questions about Medicare, Medicaid, Medicare Supplemental Insurance, Medicare Part D enrollment, Long-Term Care Insurance and related issues.

SHIP is seeking volunteers who enjoy meeting and working with other people, who love a challenge, are familiar with computers and the internet, and are interested in helping other people in their area.

SHIP counseling services can be provided to callers over the phone, at specific sites in the community, such as community centers, senior centers, churches, etc., or in home visits. SHIP volunteers may assist older adults or the disabled population by helping to resolve problems and answer questions, explaining eligibility requirements, assisting in filling out forms or filing appeals, and resolving billing problems, among other issues.

Once a volunteer attends the initial training, which is eight hours of self-study and three on-site training days, s/he becomes a certified SHIP counselor. Trainings are scheduled periodically throughout the year. Counselors are trained, certified and supported. Other SHIP volunteer opportunities available are: data input, filing, filling out forms, and other office-related tasks.

For more information on SHIP or how to become a SHIP counselor, please sign up here or call 269-983-7058.
